Old Miners' Volunteer Crew!
In the small town of Big Bear Lake, we have a couple of traditions we keep each year. One tradition that has been around forever is Old Miners' Days. Old Miners' Days is a month filled with celebration and cheer! Some of the events held are: Miss Clementine & Lucky Baldwin Pageant, Old Miners Days Festival, Chili Cook-off, Bluegrass Festival, and an Outhouse Race! You read that right. An outhouse race.
Sally Sherlock, the Director of Communications for the Old Miners' Association, came to the Career Center looking for some volunteers. These events they are having need a lot of extra help, and we at the Career Center were more than happy to volunteer! After setting up a Volunteer Crew made up of past and present WIA students, we got to work! We have already helped with creating memorabilia sets for their museum, setting up their new office space, making flyers and other signage, and assisting at recent events.
It has been a memorable time so far, and we can't wait to see what's next on the Old Miners' Event Calendar!

A Look at Success
On Tuesday, I went to interview Charlene Manex for my Monthly Success Story. We met at her work place-the Bear City Animal Hospital. I learned about her amazing job as a Veterinary Assistant and how she is on her way to becoming a Vet Tech! Charlene's passion is to help others in need, and she is definitely living her dream.
It is remarkable to hear the stories of individuals and to find out what paths they have chosen. Charlene shared her tale with me, and it was quite an amazing one. I've enjoyed writing her Success Story, and I can't wait to hear more stories from other WIA Students-past and present!

Silver Lining
While recruiting for our Certified Nursing Asssistant (CNA) program, and our high school completion/GED programs, we recieved a variety of responses. Some high schools looked dubiously at the flyers, while others insisted that their students did not need help to graduate and overlooked the fact that we do offer a CNA program.
Peggy Williams, the Career Center Specialist at Apple Valley High, did neither of those things. She sat down with us and genuinely listened to our explanation of our programs and what we offer. She enthusiastically accepted our flyers. It was an energizing, and refreshing segment in a day that began in a disheartening way.

Collins College of Hospitality Management.
Today Rancho Cucamonga's Hospitality and Management team enjoyed a delicious meal and beautiful tour of the Collins College at Cal Poly Pomona. We ate our lunch at The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch were students from the college 'played a role' within the restaurant. From being a Host, Cook, Waitress and Manger! Today we learned very interesting facts about this college.. Facts such as the students that worked within the restaurant were actually in class. That's right, A CLASS. 'Playing a role' in this restaurant in a 10 week class (Quarter) that gives each student a chance at each role within the restaurant. A student will be a Manger one week, then will be a waitress the next. Interesting right? What an amazing way to get restaurant experience from all areas inside the restaurant! Collins College at Cal Poly Pomona isn't just a school for the restaurant industry, but a school for the hotel industry as well. All aspects within Hospitality and Management. What a great college for our students to pursue their careers!

Marketing Meeting!
Today's meeting went wonderful! We learned numerous things from how powerful words can be, improved marketing skills, and job search skills. Our 7 hour meeting today helped us to become better student ambassadors for the Career Institute along with the young in each of our community's. These pictures are specifically from our marketing meeting where Lisa and Meradith helped each of the Student Ambassadors with our marketing skills. I can't wait to take all our information that we learned today into use!

What a very amazing experience
On February 10th, Amey, Jana, and I went to a meeting with ILP members who are in charge of providing services to foster kids. Along with other top members in association with ILP, we got to present the Career Institute with utmost delight. To be in the very room with many successful leaders in the San Bernadino county felt very gratifying. When we left the meeting, it was as if everything went better than we could have ever asked for because we got to participate and convey ideas to the senior-level intellectuals that were there... and I left the room feeling like a James Bond figure, smooth and versatile.

Marine Corps Logistics Base
One of the areas Career Institute Barstow toured yesterday at the Marine Corps Logistics Base- Tim Togafau &Jesenia Velasquez Student Ambassadors.
The ladies of the Rancho Office continued their Leadership Connection journey by taking a behind-the-scenes tour of Pomona Valley Hospital's Catering Dept. They were presented the steps on how the Director of Food/Bev. and his staff are able to prep and deliver over eight hundred meals a day. The average cater might find this a bit tedious, however prepping a patient's meal according to their strict dietary needs is no easy task. This was an excellent experience for our students as they all took a passion in the medical field and the catering business. -Daniel Macias

#SuccessSaturday
This picture indicates the start of my success journey. The moment i shook Mr. Gilbert's (General Manager of the Sheraton Hotel) i knew i was heading in the right direction; the direction of success. Earning 5 certificates from the Career Institute was just the beginning. I have the confidence to say i have gotten far with my life i wouldn't ever imagine getting without the guidance of the Career Institute. Not only have i gotten far with my success journey, i am privileged to share my success story with the youth in my community. Hopefully to inspire the youth that are lost and need a path, to get onto the right path; a path of success.
How will you inspire the youth in your community? What is your success story?

At the meeting to plan the 2014 Apple Valley Leadership Connection, there were many new ideas; such as reading books about leadership (because, as April Gower pointed out, sucessful people read everyday). Other ideas were leadership development (led by Rick Danzey, who is the Chair of the Planning Committee), reading Success Magazine for Youth, community involvement, and many more ideas. This is the beginning of a successful program!
